Establish a Fun Bedtime Routine

Try to make going to bed a positive thing, not a negative one. By establishing a fun bedtime routine, such as brushing their teeth with you and reading them a story, it can be a time that toddlers and preschoolers look forward to and may even remind you about!

Stick to Regular Bedtimes and Awake Times

The body works on what is known as the circadian rhythm. This is your body’s internal clock that cues your body to sleep and wake naturally. However, if sleep times vary, this cycle can become disrupted. This will help your child to feel fully rested and get the sleep their little bodies need to grow.

Limit Food and Drink Before Bed

It’s a good idea to limit food and drink (especially caffeinated beverages) before bed. This will help ensure they don’t have to wake up in the middle of the night to use the restroom, and it will help them feel ready for bed, too.

Set Up a Great Sleep Environment

By having a wonderful sleeping environment, your child will look forward to going to bed. Perhaps investing in a canopy or cool bed sheets could do the trick. Limit noise and light in your child’s bedroom at night so they can sleep undisturbed. Limit screen time before bed as the blue light can disrupt the production of sleep hormones.

Alleviate Any Fears or Concerns

Many children are naturally afraid of the dark. Do your best to help alleviate any concerns or fears they may have when it comes to sleeping. You can implement a night light if your child is afraid of the dark. You can ensure they have their favorite stuffed animal or toy nearby. And, be on the lookout for sleep disorders, such as sleepwalking or night terrors, that would need a professional evaluation.
